About this Performance

Big Thief are among the boldest sonic explorers—and most poignant songwriters—of their generation. In a glowing five-star review of their new album Double Infinity, The Guardian says, “These nine perfect songs bristle with life, from the classic melodies to the spring water acoustic riffs to the bustling rhythm section.” In their own rave, Rolling Stone says “They’ve become one of the most beloved bands of the 2020s” thanks to “songs grounded in folk music’s rustic beauty and freewheeling honesty that are also spacious sound-worlds.” Pitchfork says they’re “less inclined to tell a story from start to finish than to transport you into a space of pure feeling.”

While that might make it seem as if Big Thief are removed from the world of everyday human concerns, they remain grounded in the intricacies of ordinary life and the ties that bind us. That same Pitchfork review says Double Infinity’s “songs endeavor to express the purest kind of love.” Singer and songwriter Adrianne Lenker’s ear for melody and eye for detail has won her extraordinary accolades—it’s not a stretch to hear her as heir apparent to classic songwriting masters like Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, and Leonard Cohen. “We are made of love,” she sings on “Grandmother.” “We are also made of pain.”

They return to the Bowl following their 2018 show in support of Father John Misty and Gillian Welch. Chicago rapper and poet Noname—another masterful writer who distills the world’s complexities into clear statements of intent—kicks off the night.
